The Supremes
The most successful "girl group" of the 1960's, The Supremes rivaled even the Beatles in terms of red-hot commercial appeal, reeling off five number-one singles in a row at one point. The trio, composed of Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, and the lovely Florence Ballard were no over-night success story, having a few flops before the first big hit. They all had met in the late 50's in Detroit's Brewster housing project and were originally a quartet known as the Primettes. Their big-break came during the summer of 1964 while touring with a road-show put together by Dick Clark when "Where Did Our Love Go" went to number one, establishing what would be the prototype for their run of five consecutive number-one hits in 1964-1965. Not all of their singles went to number one but they usually did awfully well. In November 1969, Diana Ross began a solo career. Jean Terrell took her place as lead singer and the group continued making Motown Music through 1977. The motion picture, Dreamgirls, is based on the Supremes career together. They will always be one of my personal favorites from the list of talented artists of the Motown Era. Find out more at: www.rockhall.com/hof/inductee.asp?id=197
