The Rolling Stones are an English band whose blues, rhythm and blues and rock and roll-infused music became popular during the "British Invasion" in the early 1960s. The band was formed in London in 1962 by Brian Jones, and eventually was led by the songwriting partnership of singer Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards. Drummer Charlie Watts and bassist Bill Wyman completed the early primary lineup. Their early image of unkempt and surly youth is one that many musicians still emulate.
Original leader Jones was fired from the band and eventually died in 1969 and was replaced by twenty year old Mick Taylor. Taylor's introduction would help lead the band back toward the more blues-based rock sound they had been looking for after Jones' departure. It was during their 1969 American tour that the Stones were introduced and have often been referred to subsequently as "The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World". Taylor would also depart the Stones in 1974, to be replaced by former Faces guitarist Ron Wood. Wyman would leave in 1993.
The band have released 55 albums of original work and compilations, and have had 37 top-10 singles. They have sold over 200 million albums worldwide. Their 1971 album Sticky Fingers would begin a string of eight consecutive number one albums in the United States. In 1989 the Rolling Stones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2004 they were ranked #4 in Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
A few of their massive hits include, "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", which was the first number-one hit for the band, "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Honky Tonk Women", "Brown Sugar", "Tumbling Dice", "Start Me Up", Gimme Shelter", "You Can't Always Get What You Want", "Angie", and the disco-influnced "Miss You".
In 2002, The Rolling Stones released Forty Licks (UK #2; US #2), a greatest hits album that spanned their career and contained four new songs recorded with the latter-day core band of Jagger, Richards, Watts, Wood, Leavell and Jones. The same year, Q magazine named The Rolling Stones as one of the "50 Bands To See Before You Die", and the 2002-2003 Licks Tour gave people that chance.
The Rolling Stones are currently in a world tour for their latest album A Bigger Bang which is classified as an ambitious, wide-ranging collection of hard-hitting, high-powered rock and blues songs. Running a full sixteen tracks, it is the band's longest new album since 1972's Exile on Main Street. Key cuts include "Streets Of Love," the first international single; "Rough Justice," which will be targeted to U.S. rock radio formats; and "Back Of My Hand," a raw, rough-edged new song in the classic Rolling Stones blues style. They are to return to Europe this summer for more shows on the enormously successful tour. It is currently the highest grossing tour ever on record. What can be said about The Stones that has not been said already. What can be written about the wild parties and string of drug busts that has not already been written.
