Simon & Garfunkel

Simon & Garfunkel are an American music duo comprised of Paul Simon and Arthur “Art” Garfunkel. They met in grade school in 1953, when they both appeared in the school play of Alice In Wonderland (Simon played the White Rabbit and Art played The Cheshire Cat). They formed the group Tom and Jerry in 1957, and had their first taste of success with the minor hit “Hey Schoolgirl.” As Simon and Garfunkel, the duo rose to fame in 1965 after the release of the hit single, “The Sound Of Silence.” Their music was featured in the landmark film, The Graduate, propelling them further into the public consciousness. They became well-known for their close harmonies and sometimes unstable relationship, rising to the ranks of one of the most popular recording artists of the 1960s. A few of their biggest hit singles were, “The Sound Of Silence”, “Mrs. Robinson”, and “Bridge Over Troubled Water”. The duo would receive several Grammys and be inducted into the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame. Rolling Stone Magazine ranks them #40 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists Of All Time. They have reunited on several occasions since their 1970 break-up. I became the proud owner of the “Bookends” album in 1967 after sending off for it as a member of the Columbia Record Club, a mail-order music service. It would be the first “folk music” album I’d ever buy. Paul Simon would go on to become one of the few male vocalists (I prefer female singers) I’d call “a favorite”, a title he still holds to this day. Find out more at: www.simonandgarfunkel.com
